Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely used and effective form of psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It is based on the idea that our thoughts and perceptions influence how we feel and act. In CBT, therapists work collaboratively with individuals to identify, challenge, and reframe negative or unhelpful thought patterns and beliefs that may contribute to emotional distress or problematic behaviors. By changing these patterns through cognitive restructuring and adopting more adaptive thoughts and behaviors, CBT aims to alleviate symptoms of various mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, phobias, low self-esteem, disordered eating, and more. CBT is typically a shorter term, goal-oriented therapy that equips individuals with practical skills to manage their difficulties and improve their overall well-being.

CBT utilizes various techniques to help individuals modify their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Some commonly used CBT techniques include cognitive restructuring and challenging, behavioral activation and increasing positive, rewarding, and social activities, exposure therapy, journaling and thought records, relaxation techniques, social skills training, and improving problem solving skills. These techniques, among others, are tailored to the individual’s needs and goals to promote positive change.
