Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR Therapy is a psychotherapy technique that is used to help individuals process traumatic experiences and overcome the negative effects of those experiences. EMDR involves focusing on distressing memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps, or sounds). This process aims to stimulate the brain’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing the individual to reprocess traumatic memories in a more adaptive way. (Bilateral stimulation eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, and this portion of sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes recent events). EMDR has been extensively researched and proven effective in the treatment of trauma, including PTSD.

Unlike other therapy that focuses on altering the emotions, thoughts and responses resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR therapy focuses directly on the memory. EMDR focuses on changing the way the memory is stored in the brain, decreasing difficult symptoms.
